The Basilica thrives thanks to those who devote themselves to it every day. Joining our team of volunteers means helping to promote an iconic site at the crossroads of heritage, culture and local life.



On 13 December 1922, the non-profit organisation ‘Les Amis de la Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Cœur à Koekelberg, à Ganshoren lez Bruxelles’ (Friends of the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Koekelberg, Ganshoren near Brussels) was created to organise fundraising activities. The purpose of the non-profit organisation is clearly stated in Article 3 of its statutes:


King Leopold II's project and Cardinal Mercier's wish, expressed on behalf of the Belgian episcopate, to build a national basilica with outbuildings on the high plateau of Koekelberg.



The association will do everything necessary to arouse interest in Belgium and abroad in order to complete the construction; it will collect all donations and gifts in order to construct and maintain the building; it will control how these funds are used.



To this end, it will use a wide variety of means, such as: conducting propaganda campaigns, advertising, organising conferences, performances and fundraisers, as well as setting up local committees, etc."




Today, the non-profit organisation Friends of the Basilica of Koekelberg (BCE 0407.831.946) is headed by Ms Martine MOTTEUX ABELOOS.
The Administrative Body
is chaired by Mr. Dominique MICHEL.



The non-profit organisation Friends of the Basilica could not exist without a team of motivated and committed men and women. Every day, nearly twenty employees work on the maintenance, cleaning, reception, administrative and parish management of the Basilica. You are sure to meet one or two of them during your visit.
